Loans and GrantsThe Environmental Service Program (ESP) administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) provides financial assistance to municipalities for local environmental projects.
Financial incentives available for redevelopment of brownfields include: Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund; The Redevelopment Agreements between state and non-liable developer which allow for recovery of remediation costs; tax abatements in environmental opportunity zones; and urban site acquisition program.
New Jersey Department of Labor Office of Customized Training offers grants to employers for providing safety, basic skills, and quality and productivity improvement training to employees.
Environmental Compliance
Use of a customized compliance calendar along with a "Combined Emergency Plan" and a "Combined Training Program" for a facility ensures that compliance is achieved with all requirements without duplication and confusion to employees.
Covering a facility's operations in the smallest number of batch air permits can offer operational flexibility and minimize air permit costs.
Remediation
Some practical considerations for remediation of a site: evaluate the use of institutional and engineering control, and the designation of historic fill and ground water exception areas along with natural remediation; purchase cost overrun or cost cap insurance to guarantee the cost of cleanup; consider innovative technologies such as in-situ oxidation, in-situ air sparging with ground water recirculation, multiphase vacuum extraction, enhanced bioremediation for cleanup.

As buildings have become more energy efficient, they have become less forgiving environmentally and can be a cause of employee health problems. Employee complaints of mucous membrane irritation, fatigue, headache etc. can be caused by poor indoor air quality.
